"Eats, Shoots and Leaves"

Truss uses a quote from Eric Patridge that says punctuation is "the line along which the train (composition, style, writing) must travel if it isn't to run away with its driver." To me, this is a perfect way to explain the importance of punctuation. I believe when puncuation isn't used correctly, it creates many misunderstandings and can mean that exact opposite of what is meant to be said.
Truss also discusses puncuation in texts and e-mails. During an e-mail to a professor or a person of authority, I try to make it as professional as I possibly can. However, that doesn't mean I capitalize every "I" and look up everything that I need to spell. Word documents and Outlook e-mails have us spoiled. They do the editing for us, which makes us lazy when capitalizing that "I" and adding in an apostrophe. I do believe that the understanding of grammar is lessening, but I don't believe it's our fault.
